The Trip I Thought Would Be Hard for Him

When I first planned a trip to Croatia to visit my mother’s homeland, I wasn’t worried about the country, the travel, or the itinerary. I know the language. I know the land. I’ve been surrounded by this culture my whole life.

What I was worried about was my husband, Dennis.

This would be his first trip overseas to a country where he didn’t speak the language. He had met my family once before, over 20 years ago, but my older aunts and uncle don’t speak English. I wondered how he’d connect.

The Birth of “Dennisovich”

A year before the trip, Dennis started listening to a Croatian language disc in the car. I thought it was just a nice gesture. But he took it seriously. By the time we landed, he was greeting people and trying out phrases before I could even translate.

And then, in just 10 days, something amazing happened. My husband became “Dennisovich”—Croatia’s Adopted Son. He bonded with my older relatives in ways I still can’t explain. Conversations flowed without me translating, powered by smiles, food, gestures, and laughter.
