Experience More of Croatia Island Hopping

With 1,244 islands scattered across the Adriatic, choosing which ones to visit - and how to reach them - can be one of the biggest challenges when planning a Croatian vacation.

Here's how island hopping aboard a small ship allows you to experience more of Croatia.

Croatia's 1,244 Islands

Croatia is home to 1,244 islands, islets, and reefs—each with its own character, history, local traditions, flavors, and rhythm of life. The challenge isn't deciding whether to visit the islands—it's deciding which ones and figuring out the best way to experience them.

Rather than spending hours researching ferry schedules, comparing islands, and trying to piece together the perfect itinerary, you can choose from thoughtfully designed island-hopping routes that have been refined over years of experience. Some itineraries explore the stunning southern Adriatic, while others showcase Croatia's quieter northern islands. There are cruises designed for food and wine lovers, active travelers who enjoy cycling or hiking, and those simply looking to relax and discover Croatia at an unhurried pace.

This is where small-ship cruising really shines!

Island Hopping by Ferry

It is possible to reach the most habited islands by ferry.   Croatia's ferry system is comfortable and easy to use.  But what most firsts-time visitors don't realize is that some of the most popular destinations are much further than they appear on a map.   Hvar, for example, is more than a four-hour ferry journey from Split and just as far from Dubrovnik.   Before long, you can find yourself spending more time traveling to the islands than actually enjoying them..

We know, because that's exactly what we did our first time in Croatia.

We enjoyed visiting the islands but we realized we were spending more time getting to them than actually enjoying them.

More Than a One-Time Destination

In no single trip could you ever experience all that Croatia has to offer—and that’s part of its charm.

A small-ship cruise introduces you to five or six remarkable destinations, giving you an incredible Adriatic vacation while still leaving plenty of reasons to return and discover even more.

Our first small-ship cruise didn’t feel like we were checking Croatia off our bucket list. Instead, it inspired us to start planning our next Croatian adventure.

It's Just Fun, too.

There’s something about island hopping that brings out the fun in everyone. When the ship drops anchor in a beautiful Adriatic cove, the swim platform comes down, the music is playing, and suddenly everyone is ready to jump in. You can float in the sea, swim to shore, grab a paddleboard—or, if you’re feeling adventurous, even take the plunge from the top of the ship.

And the best part is that everyone gets caught up in it. You may have started the cruise not knowing the other people onboard, but before long you’re swimming together, laughing, cheering each other on and sharing the experience. It’s carefree, a little adventurous, and one of those genuinely happy parts of the trip that you’ll remember long after the cruise is over.
