RELAX, YOU'VE GOT TIME!
One of the first things we noticed in Croatia was how comfortable they want you to be. Almost everywhere we stopped for coffee, a drink, or dinner, the chairs had cushions on them.
It's not just at upscale restaurants or waterfront cafes. We found them in village squares, family-run konabas, and quiet local eateries.
The goal isn't to get you in and out.
It's to make you comfortable enough to stay as long as you like.
YOU'LL HAVE TO ASK FOR THE CHECK
in the US, the check arrives quickly. In Croatia, your server won't interrupt your time at the table.
They're not ignoring you or providing poor service - they're giving you time. Time to finish your conversation, time to enjoy more wine, or time to simply be present.
When you're ready to leave, you'll have to ask for the bill.
It's one of those small cultural touches that says a lot about Croatian hospitality.
TIME FEELS DIFFERENT HERE
Coffee is not something you rush through on the way to the next activity. Dinner is meant to be enjoyed. An evening walk along the Riva is part of the experience, not simply a way to get somewhere else.
Croatians understand the value of being present. There is even a Dalmatian expression for the peaceful state of doing very little and enjoying it completely: "fjaka".
You do not need to master the meaning of the word to experience it.
You begin to understand it while sitting beside the Adriatic with nowhere else you need to be.
EXPERIENCE CROATIA, DON'T JUST VISIT IT
There is a certain irony in traveling halfway around the world to experience a country that has turned slowing down into an art form - only to spend your vacation following a timetable.
It's impossible to experience all of Croatia in one trip - and that's perfectly okay. Instead of asking how much you can fit in, ask how deeply you want to experience the places you choose to visit.
